Salt - an essential mineral

Salt is an essential mineral that the body needs every day. It is in blood and cells and makes a significant contribution to health. Like so many things, it's all about the right balance: Small amounts of salt are important for the body, while too much is unhealthy

Salt is not all the same

There are three types of salt: rock salt, sea salt and vacuum salt. Although they have the same basic composition, each type is unique in its origin and the way it is obtained.

Rock salt

Millions of years ago, water from vast primordial seas evaporated due to intense sunlight and high temperatures. Over time, the remaining salt was covered and protected by soil and rock. Today it lies deep underground and is mined.

Rock salt occurs in various colors, even pink or blue. Pink rock salt is widely recognized as originating in the Himalayan region but is also found in other regions of the world like Germany. The pink color is mainly attributed to traces of iron within the salt. Blue rock salt, with its unique coloration derived from minerals such as potassium and iron, is predominantly found in Persia.

Sea salt

Sea salt is harvested through the natural evaporation of seawater. It is collected in shallow basins where it naturally evaporates through the power of the sun and wind. Special machines assist in harvesting, washing and drying the sea salt.

Even today, sea salt is still harvested by hand in some regions. This manual work requires time, patience and a deep understanding of traditional harvesting. The salt is formed naturally - without industrial processing such as washing and drying.

Fleur de Sel - ‘flower of the sea’

Fleur de Sel creates on warm, sunny days when the warm wind forms fine crystals on the surface of the sea. These fine crystals are carefully skimmed off by hand. Fleur de Sel is special for its gentle texture and unique shape.

Vacuum salt

Vacuum salt is extracted deep from the earth. There it is dissolved with water to create a salty solution – the brine. It is transported to the surface and then heated. The water evaporates and fine salt crystals gradually form – the pure vacuum salt.
